A shed slab price starts with the shed itself. Size is only one part of the quote: the intended use, supplier’s footing details, site access and the work needed to prepare the ground all matter. A garden storage shed and a workshop used for vehicles need different planning.
What changes the cost?
| Item | What to clarify |
|---|---|
| Shed design | Provide the supplier’s dimensions, anchor locations, drawings and any engineering requirements. |
| Groundwork | Ask what clearing, excavation, spoil removal, base preparation and formwork are included. |
| Access | A narrow side passage or rear yard may change how concrete and equipment reach the site. |
| Levels and water | Check finished floor height, door threshold and how runoff will be kept away from the shed. |
| Services and approvals | Identify plumbing or electrical penetrations, inspections and any required approval responsibilities. |
Garden shed slab cost: start with the scope
A small shed still has fixed work such as delivery, access and preparation. A square-metre rate on its own may not represent the total. Compare quotes for the same shed drawings and intended use, and ask for any minimum charge or separate preparation allowance to be shown.
Example footprints for a quote enquiry
| Shed dimensions | Approximate footprint | Details still needed |
|---|---|---|
| 3 m × 3 m | 9 m² | Supplier’s exact slab dimensions, footing and anchor requirements. |
| 6 m × 3 m | 18 m² | Door locations, intended loads and site access. |
| 6 m × 6 m | 36 m² | Supplier design, vehicle or workshop use and ground preparation. |
These are area calculations, not construction specifications or advertised prices. Current Illawarra pricing needs a quote for your actual site. Provide the supplier’s required slab dimensions even if they differ from the shed footprint.
Included, excluded or an allowance?
Ask the concreter to label excavation, soil disposal, base, formwork, reinforcement, concrete, finishing and clean-up. Clarify whether engineering, approvals, service work, anchors, pump access, extra footing work and reinstatement are included, excluded or priced as allowances. Ask how unexpected ground conditions would be agreed and priced before additional work proceeds.
Get the shed details first
Choose the model and obtain the supplier’s slab and footing requirements before asking for a firm price. Otherwise you risk a slab that does not suit the frame or door. For an Albion Park, Dapto or Flinders backyard with restricted side access, measure the gate and describe any steps or retaining walls.
Compare an itemised total
A 6 m × 3 m shed has an 18 m² footprint, but the slab may need dimensions and footing details from the shed supplier. Ask whether the price includes excavation, disposal, base, formwork, concrete, reinforcement, finishing, joints, clean-up and GST where applicable. Confirm who supplies engineering and coordinates the shed installer. Discuss any approval requirements with your council or certifier for the specific building and site before work is booked. Read about shed slabs and other slab projects.
Prepare photos for an Illawarra shed quote
Send the proposed shed location and the entire route from the street, including the narrowest gate. Note steps, retaining walls, known services and nearby buildings. For Flinders, Kiama or other Illawarra properties, describe the conditions at your address rather than assuming a suburb-wide soil or drainage condition.

Can I get a slab quote before buying the shed?
You can discuss a preliminary budget, but provide the chosen shed’s dimensions and design requirements before accepting a final construction quote.
Is a shed slab priced only per square metre?
No. Site preparation, access, design details and fixed work such as excavation or delivery can make a simple area calculation misleading.
